Daer Hill Wind Farm, above Beattock
27 turbines

Save Our Hills Moffat were cautiously heartened yesterday when DGC Planning Committee overrode the recommendation of their Planning Officer and voted to object to Daer Wind Farm application. SOHM had expressed concern to DGC that the report had been rushed through and the recommendation was inappropriate. As the decision was taken after the time limit set by the Energy Consents Unit, this will not automatically trigger a Public Inquiry, We feel this is robbing the constituents of Dumfries and Galloway of their opportunity to be heard.

SOHM organised a protest outside the Council offices before the Planning Meeting and we were joined enthusiastically by Hands Off Our Hills, Save Our Hills Dumfries and Galloway and Save Mochrum Fell. It is to be hoped that our elected representatives are taking note of the groundswell of calls across the region that enough is enough.

Moffat and District CC met on 28th November and their response to Scoop Hill  Rivox were on the AgendaThey will not be taking a stance of objection.  Instead they are purely communicating the comments derived from the Public Meeting held earlier in November.  The text of their responses are here:

Moffat and District Community Council held a Public Meeting on Wednesday, 8th November at which over 120 people heard presentations from the two wind farm developers, CWL and Belltown Power.

In response, Save Our Hills Moffat focussed on three main questions:

  • Is there a need for more turbines in Dumfries and Galloway?
Scotland already exports more renewable energy than it uses. Dumfries and Galloway currently produces 10 times the generation needed for the region’s population.

  • Is Moffat the right location for industrial-scale wind farms?
Home to the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project
The first Dark Sky Town in Europe
Bordered by the Southern Upland Way and Talla Hartfell Wildland Project

  • Is there a better alternative - namely a wholly community-owned wind farm (2 - 4 turbines)?
Wholly community owned wind farms provide benefit payments that are, on average, 34 times more than the private industry standard. The best performing project (Westray) produces 60 times more.
